Film noir is a crime genre that began in the early 1940's in Hollywood and remained a frequently used medium until well into the early 1960's.
In this trailer the low key and high key lighting keeps
changing, so it changes in every shot. In the first scene where he is sitting
down they have used low key lighting. I can tell this because you could see a
back light focusing on half of the man’s body and then the other half is a shadow
which tells us that they have used low key lighting. This is done to show us
that the man is in tension. Then the lighting changes from low key to high key
when the woman is walking. This is done to make the women look more realistic. After
the women the first shot comes up again for like a second. After that low key
lighting is used till he calls the girl over till then it’s mostly back light
and shadows. When the woman is walking it is very dark and you could only see the
glass of whiskey in her hand. The low key lighting does not change till he
smokes the cigarette. When he smokes the cigarette you could Clearly see half of
his face which means that it is high key lighting. Then when he finishes the cigarette the high
key lighting changes to low key lighting till the end of the clip.
The producer has low key and high key lighting in the
poster, but mainly it is low key. The light on the man is low key lighting I
can say this because most of his face you can’t see. The other bit which you
could see is because of the lamp. The producer has done this to explain the character
to us. To express his feelings to us, everything is dark only a little light is
on the curtains which suggest he is worried because he is sitting with a gun
and there is a bottle there. All the low and high key lighting is used for a
reason which is to suggest something to us. Outside the window is all high key lighting
because you could see what is there and it is more clear and realistic.
The curtains are blacked out to make the other things to
stand out, such as the bottle, the lamp, the gun, the glass. These are all there
for some reason, to connote something and to also make the message clear about
this picture. By using the low key lighting on the man, makes a shadow of him
and it makes him look black and white. The amount of low key lighting also
suggests the genre of the film which is an old action film. On the face low/ a little bit of high key
lighting is used to show all his facial expressions. Then the expressions
suggest the drama action of Hollywood.
