E4 is a British
digital television which is full of entertainment for a younger teenage and
adult age group. E4 has become very popular since it was launched in 2001; the
reason why it has become very popular is because of its fantastic shows and
entertainment which they provide for their audience. An example of their
popularity and success is when The Inbetweeners was aired it had 3.7 million
people watched in the same week. E4 has gained the focus demographics of 16 to 34, ABC1,
although there were more females watching the channel, though their are a lot
of male viewers. These demographics have very popular to market to because
research suggests that this age range is fashion conscious, sociable,
connected, heavy internet using, they love going out and tend to use
advertising as one of their many information sources.

Hamse said its not his sort of thing, which
suggest that he won’t watch it. He says that the target audience I have chosen
is really good because he thinks that’s the best audience for a program like
this.
Zulk said he would watch it because he says
he’s hared of a story like this before and he seems interested in it. He says
that this normally happens in regular life and normally any student would have
a crush on one teacher in the whole school. He also says that there should be a
50% male and 50% female; he thinks there should be an equal and balanced
audience. The reason why he thinks most boys would watch it is because of the
teacher, he says if the teacher is good looking then loads of students would
watch it.
Jinan says that she would watch it because
she likes the timing, she also says that she likes the idea it attracts her.
She would also watch it because there is a wider female audience estimated.
Navneet says that she would watch it
because it does happen in real life. She also says that something like this has
already happened in Waterloo road and it had a wide audience and if I have
something similar then there is a chance of having a wide audience.
Vinisha says that she would watch it
because she likes the idea that the student falls for the teacher she says
that’s a very strong USP. She says that its very unusual and would be something
different than the others.
Hargio asked a very good question he said
how old is my student? I said that the student should be around 16/17 which
means six form students. Everyone agreed with the fact that the student falling
for the teacher is a very good idea. Vinisha says that’s a strong USP and it’s
different. The one thing I would have o
think about is that I would need to change just a little bit because I can’t
keep it as the same as Waterloo Road.
Harpal says that he won’t watch it, but he
likes the idea, he says if I put some more into then it would be much more. I
could have a twist in it too make much better.
Naima would watch it because she thinks
it’s going to be interesting as waterloo road is popular. She thinks as that it
popular this would also be popular.
I think from this focus group I got really
good feedback, the one thing I should change is that I need a twist in it as I
can’t keep it as it is because then it would be exactly like waterloo road.
Loads of people liked it and they were all my target audience age, which
connotes that they would be attracted to it. And would want to watch it.
Task 1
The course work
brief
·
The thing that I found useful
is that the brief told me exactly what we need to do. It’s basically like a
guidance sheet. We have to produce the opening few scenes of your TV Programme
establishing narrative themes, characters and location.
·
The target audience is similar
to E4
·
The audience we are going to
aim our production work at is 15-34
General advice
and guidance
·
MEST2
is the AS coursework module and is worth 50% of the AS award.
Specific Guidance for 2013 Briefs
Helpful research questions:
- Could a narrower audience group be identified within the 15-35 age
group?
- How should the audience be addressed? What do they respond to?
- What type of texts does E4 typically broadcast before the watershed
(what rules
- must they work within)?
- Is there a gap in the market?
- Is there a format/genre that could be developed further for this
broadcast slot?

Weekly progress
report
I have started my
pre-production work because I am working alone and I would need a good amount
of time to do everything, that’s why I have started the work. I have already
finished the schedule sheet next I have to do the script. This might take a bit
of time because I have to think of the lines myself and come up with an idea myself.
Print
This is a poster of the film and it comes from the
print side of the three advertisement features.
The title is in a huge font. The reason why it is in a huge font is
because they want to catch the audiences eyes while they are walking past or if
anyone drives past then they could see it as well because it’s at the top of a
gate and its everything has a huge font. In the top right hand corner they have
put the tittle of the album ill Manors. This is also the tittle of the film, so
it’s promoting two things at once. The reason why the font is very bold and
thick is because they do not want the audience to forget what the film was called.
So whoever looks at the poster once, would never forget the title. The colour of the font is white so it stands out
and contrasts with the background.
The next thing that is very catchy is the release
date, which is also in a big font. The colour of the font is red, it catches
the audience eyes. The reason why they have the release date in such a big font
because it’s a important feature. That’s the feature that tells or informs the
audience when the film would come out.
The producer of the poster has thought a lot about where to put the
release date, which is one of the biggest key questions. The reason why he has put the release date
right at the bottom is because once the audience have seen everything on top
they would scroll to the bottom and that’s the last thing the producer wants
the audience to remember. The release date, the reason why he wants them to see
that last is because the only thing they would remember is the last thing they
saw and the producer makes the release date the last thing for them.
Finally, the last two things which would be
important is the tagline and the central image. The tagline is the line under
the title and the central image is placed right in the central. It’s a picture
of Ben Drew himself with a cigarette in his mouth. He’s been given a very serious look; this is
done because they want to express all his pain and feelings which he has kept
inside him.
Broadcast
To start off with all the titles, sky lines,
taglines that appear are in bold. The reason why the title is in a thick font
is because the producer doesn’t want the audience to forget the title of the
film. he wants them to remember it in the film go, that’s why he has put it in
a thick font so it isn’t easy to forget. The reason why the other lines which
appear in the trailer are also thick is because the producer wants to catch the
audience eyes with them. He wants them to read every single line because every
line has its own meaning to it. The
producer wants the audience to fit themselves in the trailer so they later when
the film comes out they would want to go and watch it. The other thing which is
really effective is that the producer has shown the title of the film right at
the end, this is done because that’s the last thing he wants the audience to
remember. The reason why putting the title till the last is very effective
because the last thing the audience see that’s what they will remember, which
is a positive point because when the film comes out they would remember what it
was called. The other thing that the producer leaves till the end is the
release date, this is done because of the same reason, and he wants the
audience to see that last. The reviewers quote is a very important factor in
promoting the film, it helps promote the film. it tells the audience whether
the film is worth watching or not. It says that the film is worth watching and
this is made evident through 'Simone Baired’ , as he stated “A film for our
times” . This could suggest that this film would be suitable for the youths
(teenagers)
Non diegetic sound is
used throughout the entire trailer of a voice over of Plan B. The voice over of
Plan B highlights he is the narrative of the film. The fact that he raps his
music anchors the image as it makes it clear for the audience; therefore it is
a preferred reading. The editing is done very thoughtfully, the producer has
used face shots to represent that it is a multi strand narrative which means
that it has more than one narrative in the film. Fast editing is used in the
trailer which creates that enigma in the audience minds, they keep showing the
interesting bits then when it comes to the end of the interesting bit they cut
the scene which makes the audience who have seen the trailer go watch it.
The music used throughout the
trailer is all urban music, which connotes that its for the youth because they
are the ones who normally listen to all this rap/ urban music. The sound track
that is played in the trailer is also played in the film which means that this
would engage the audience. This is known as ‘synergy’ which means promoting
something through something else. In this case Plan B has promoted his film
through his music, same as he promoted all his music through his concerts and
shows he done.
E-media
The first thing that
is very effective is the colour white, they have used white for most of the
writing which attracts the audiences eyes and makes them want to read
everything and find out information. The other thing which is really eye catchy
is the sky line at the top saying ON BLU-RAY, DVD, DOWNLOAD AND ON DEMAND NOW
this is in a really big font, which catches the audience eyes, it offers them
many ways to watch it. It tells them that its on DVD, its on the internet and
the final thing is that its on demand. It makes the audience feel that how can
you not have seen the film yet. It makes them feel left out. It also persuades
them to watch it, which means the sales would rise just because of that one
line.
All the tabs on the
side are there for the followers or the audience to explore the film, or find
out the plot before buying the film or watching the film. the website gives out
a huge amount of information on the films background and on the directors
background. There is a special and separate tab for the director himself, this
is very important because loads of fans or the audience would want to find out
information on the director or would like to hear from him then they could do
that by clicking on his tab. Synargy is also used again in the website because
Plan Bs music album is being cross promoted in the website. All the institution
company logos are at the bottom of the website this tells the audience who
helped in making thye film.
Tedx lecture
1) Plan B believes that the media always gives
teenagers bad representation and they always show them as if they are up to
something. Drew says that is wrong, not all teenagers are bad. They’ve always
been given a bad name that’s why now they do what they think is right and they
do the things which they are told not to.
He says that the government do not respect people who live in a council
estate or people who are living under benefits. That’s why he strongly hates
the government and politics. He himself has been through this that’s why he
knows everything, he isn’t saying this from someone else point of view, he’s
saying this from his point of view. In
his TEDX lecture he shows that he really is a good man because the thing he
wants to do is really good. He wants to motivate and wants to sort of those
children’s lives who live in council estate and who start taking drugs at
teenage life. What he tells us about himself is that when he was 10 he got
kicked out of school and he says that he had no respect for his teachers for
the community. He thought that he is not accepted by the society. The reason
why he really hates the government is because he says that the taxes that
everyone pays do not go for the right use. He doesn’t care for the rich people,
he cares for the poor. He knows how it feels being brought up in a broken
family.
2) The target audience for the Tedx lecture were
journalist and people who read the guardian newspaper. The social economic classification for this
group would be A/B because they all looked like they have a great life and a
great job with a great pay. The pyschographics group related to this would be
aspirers because they are people who have more money or more respect than
others. The target audience for his lecture are completely different to his
target audience for his music albums and his film. The target audience for his
film is from 18 to about 32, you could also call them young adults. The target
audience for the lecture is peopling aged 32+. This age group is completely
different from the age group for Ben Drew’s film. I think for his music he is targeting 13-18
because his message in his music is not to do the bad things which he would
defiantly be targeting young teens
because they are the ones that fall in to traps like that and in that age they
get influenced.
3) Plan B says that the media demonises the young
children who live in council estate. He says that they never show the good
things they do, but they always show the bad. This means that they always try to
give a bad stereotype to the young youth living in council estate. He also said
that the media changed the meaning of the word “chav”. They named all the
teenagers chav not only that but they gave a negative representation to them.
Now whenever the word chav is used against teenagers they are trying to give a
bad representation to the teenager. Stanley Cohen believes the media makes the
problems sound even worse than it actually is which is called amplification. The media exaggerated
the event/news making people in society worry even more causing a moral panic.
