Analysis of Ill Manors trailer

In the trailer the codes and convections that we see are slogans, names of the stars, names of the company, names of the institutions that are involved, names of the companies that funded the film, the directors name, the release date, and the rating of the film. This is done in trailers because they want to gives us the main information about the film. Sometimes this has a strong affect on the audience, it could make them go watch it if they see that there favourite stars are in the film, or the director is their favourite director. The slogans which are also known as the taglines have a very strong meaning behind them. They connote something very strong that’s why they have used loads of them in the Ill Manors trailer. All the other convections that are used just explain the background of the film. Normally the trailers are distributed by the same studios that produce the film.

The Ill Manors trailer uses taglines after every new shot, so they would show a scene and to build on the scene, they would normally write a line or two. Explaining what is happening. They show all the companies that are involved in any way within the film for example the Revolver Entertainment was one of the main companies which were involved in making Ill Manors and their name came on the second shot because there were the main company who was involved in the production of Ill Manors.

The reason why they show the release date is because they want the audience to know when it would come out so they could go see it. The reason why the producer of the trailer puts the release date right at the end is because that’s the last thing they want the audience to remember.

The audience psychographics for Ill Manors would be reformers and strugglers and demographics from the age group of 18 to 34's both men and woman as the film promotes woman just as bad as men.  

The target audience for Ill Manors is 18-34 and the producer uses fast and quick shot, the reason why the producer of the trailer uses fast and quick shots is because he wants it to be attractive to its target audience because the target audience is 18+ they are the audience who would normally like fast things. So that’s why the producer has used fast editing so it appeals to its audience. The trailer gives away loads of clues about its narrative such as it tells you that it’s a film about drugs and violence because there are so many scenes which are just so obvious to understand. There are scenes where girls are taking drugs this gives a clue that the film is about drugs and it also gives a bad representation of women, strugglers would like to watch the film because they are the ones who are addicted to drugs and alcohol because they couldn’t make it anywhere in life. The film shows or connotes life being a struggle, if you take drugs.

 The main stars are visible in the trailer because they aren’t high professionalized actors or actresses, the producer of the trailer would have to show them on screen i the trailer, so that the audience can get attracted to them because they aren’t going to be that filmier with them. When the action in the trailer starts then Plan B’s songs starts playing which is synergy because he’s cross promoting his film and his music career.

The genre of the film is crime drama and the producer of the trailer has used characters, settings, lighting, colour, music, camera shots/movements/angles and editing to represent the genre in the trailer.  

The producer uses negative characters to represent the genre which is crime drama. He shows the main characters taking drugs, fighting with each other, to represent the genre. He wants to give that negative stereotype to the local estate teenagers or estate adults. Who could not become something in life, so they took the bad path.  The producer uses a local council estate to represent its genre, as it is a low budget film then it would be in a local council estate.  Where the drug taking or selling scenes are in the trailer they are done in a dark setting, so there is not much light because it is a negative fact and dark normally connotes bad and negative. In the trailer at times when there is a serious scene going then they would play the voice the actual sound coming out from the mouth, but if there is nothing as serious then they would just play Plan B’s music. The reason why they play the voice over is because they want they audience to know what is happening. The producer of the trailer uses quick shots because he wants its audience to get attracted by it. As the audience is from 18 they are the people would most likely like fat things. Editing is used to represent the genre of the film, they use all the things above to represent the genre and so that the audience is attracted by what they have used.

EastEnders
In the 30th November episode they start off with a close up of the guys shoes this is done because they wanted to show the audience what he is doing they wanted to show him doing them steps that’s why they have used a close up. Later on when the woman opens the window, the shot used there is a long shot, so it shows her opening the window and you can see the shops under the window.  Then you see them having a conversation that’s when they use mid shot when the girl is talking and long shot when the guy is talking. The reason why they have used long shot while the guy is talking is because they want to show all hi movements and body language used. The producer has not used any camera movements such as a panning, tilt or any other. I think this is because there was a conversation going on and if he used any camera movements it wouldn’t have been effective.
In the first two minutes of the show non-diagetic music is not used, it’s all diagetic, which means that it’s all dialogue or its noises in the scene.  It’s all dialogue because we can see them talking to each other. Later on when there is a conversation in the kitchen, they have still used mid shots because it a small place and because both of the characters are so close to each other. So I don’t think they would of used a long shot or any other shot because mid shot for conversation is the best shot.  I think there is a continues shot used when she is walking to the stairs and she’s about to go up when the shot cuts and shows her coming up. 
Then later when the other character walks out of the house you could hear the noises outside, till the conversation starts with the man dancing outside.  There is a range of shots used outside, from mid shot to long shot and a close u on the next shot of the phone to show what is on the phone screen.
Blackberry advert for teenagers
In this 30 second advert the message that they wanted to get across has successfully done. The little anecdote that they have used is very effective, it would affect loads of young people as they would want to be in that position.  The thing that is very effective is that where ever she goes she sees the boy, which connotes love and most young teenagers out there would want to be like that.
Sound is used very effectively in this video, it’s a very calm relaxing music playing at the back, which all connotes or matches with the scene. There are a variety of shots used in this commercial; it starts off with a medium shot because you could see the girl walk past the group of boys and you can only see their waist and shoulders, which suggests that it is a medium shot.  Then when the lift opens it’s a medium shot there as well, that shot changes when she walks in to the left, in changes into a close up because the camera walks into her hair.  Medium shot continues in the bus as well, till the camera zooms in her bracelet.
I think the way the end it is an excellent ended because when she turns her bracelet and it had her barcode on it, which connotes something to do with Blackberry. The whole way through there is not even a word to do with Blackberry or not even a clue that the commercial is about Blackberry till the very end when she turns her bracelet, that’s when they promote Blackberry. The ending is very catchy. The shots that are used in the end are close up of the bracelet and then the guy scanning the barcode.  Then I think there is a hand held shot because after he scans the barcode the camera moves to the right and it is wobbling, which suggests that was a hand held shot.
Him&her
In the first two minutes of Him & Her the producer use loads of different shots, such as long shot at the very beginning were the actual programme starts. In the long shot he shows to scenes at once, he shows a man in the kitchen and a woman in the room. There are two different things going on at once, the reason why he has done this is because he wanted to show the audience that they are having a conversation. This is a very good way to show a conversation because the audience could also see what both of them are doing.  After this shot the producer uses a continuous shot, this is two different shots showed as if it’s one shot. After that there is loads of close up and medium shots, then some longs shots again. After the long shot that’s when the first two minutes of the first shot finish.
The sound is all diegetic, which means there is no sound on their which is in the scene, there is no music as well. It’s all dialogue, which means everything is happening in the scene. Mise-en-scene is very important in the episode; it’s the things that are used in the episode, such as the props, costume, lighting, make-up, and setting. In Him&her, the episode that I have analysed, the setting is in the house, so it’s normal house lighting. The costumes that are used is normal house cloths, nothing fancy.
Freak
In episode 2 of Freak, it starts off by showing what happened in the last episode at the end, so basically the previously. It shows different scenes in a fast pace to cover most of the things of the last episode. The previously is shown for 20 seconds because they don’t want to waste too much time showing what happened in the last episode.
After the previously they start by showing the characters in the park, it’s a long shot because they want to show the audience the characters and the setting. The sound is diegetic because they are all having a general conversation. The shot changes when the Freak walks in, from a long shot it changes to a medium. Then it keeps flicking around to medium to long, then long to medium. The sound is them speaking and there is a little bit of music playing at the back in a low volume.
Then there is a shot where is says freak and then it cuts to the characters sitting in a park on the round, talking. It’s a long shot to show the characters and to show the background which is the park. Then the guy who has hafeiver gets and goes with the freak. The shot changes to them and it shows them in a house playing a game console.
Adidas
In the Adidas commercial there is only one character which is the boy. They start the commercial by showing the boy riding a bike and a little slogan comes up saying flexible, they are trying to describe the shoes, every time he pedals the bike.  Then they show him walking and another slogan comes up saying casual, what they are trying to say is that they are casual to wear anywhere.  Then they show him running and another slogan comes up saying no boundaries and he starts off running. He gets faster and faster which connotes that there are no boundaries. After that they have the shot where they just show the shoes and they say be faster. Fluid trainer, which means if you buy these shoes you, could be as fast as this boy who already has them. 
The music in the commercial starts off in a slow pace, and it gets faster and faster, the thing that this does is that it builds tension. The editing gets faster as well because they want to create that tension and the audience want to know what will happen next.

£100.000 was used to produce Ill Manors. It wasn’t a high budget blockbuster because the film was not made by an actual director; it was directed by Ben Drew who also wrote this film. He is also known as Plan B, a very famous rapper.

£4 million was given from BBC and the rest Ben Drew had to give himself in-order to complete his film.

 

4)      What is the target audience for Ill Manors?

The target audience for Ill Manors is 18, the reason why I think it is an 18 film is because of the constant swearing and the sex scenes.

As we know that Ben Drew is a music artist he used his career to promote his film Ill Manors. He also performed live concerts and done loads of performance on his songs from the film and from his music album.

 

7)      Compare this with a big budget blockbuster. What are the main similarities and differences? The Bourne Legacy is a high budget blockbuster and the similarity between both films is that the both use guns and cars and they both have action in them. The differences are that because The Bourne Legacy is a high budget film it has got a better location, it has got way more action than Ill Manors, it isn’t just ordinary action scene it has got big action scenes. This tells us that the more money you use the better your film would be.

 

8)      How does the trailer for Ill Manors hook audiences into the narrative and pose questions that the film will answer? Identify 3 ways/techniques

 

I think that the trailer for Ill Manors hooks its audience by the editing, mise en scene, and the camera work. The editing of Ill Manors hooks in its audience because the editing is fast and the audience the film is for is from 18+ which are the people who normally like fast stuff. So that’s why I think the editing hooks its audience in and makes them question them self’s that why is everything like this, they would want to watch the film to found out their answers. I think mise en scene would hook the audience in and would make then questions them self’s about things. The costume used appeals all to the films audience, which are teenagers. There are affected because they know that the people in the film are their age people, which would make them watch it.  A variety of shots have been used in the trailer, which hooks the audience in because there are times where there are serious scenes, which the audience would want to see.

15- You could use swear words in a 15 film, but you cannot use it constant. What I mean is that you cannot carrying on repeating one swear word 20 times. You could also use drugs, but you can’t encourage people to take drugs because it’s a 15 film and could easily get encouraged. Sexuality activity is allowed, but you can’t show sexual violence. 18 certificate: you could show strong portrayals of sexual activity, strong blood and gore scenes, real sex, crude and explicit sex references are permitted you could even use strong violence because they know everything.

My film analysis

I think that the story board and shot list we did helped us do everything correct because it told the camera man what shot to record, when to record and how to record it. If the story board and the shot list weren’t there, I don’t think things would have gone the way we wanted it. It was like a guide throughout the recording process. The thing I would do next time is that I would make the story and the shot list much more better, so that it is one easy to understand, and second that it makes whatever I am recording much more better.

The thing that went well in my video is that we followed the 180o shot rule, the shot went well. We saved loads of time while recording that shot, what we did was that we recorded the whole play through one side and then we did the other, and when we got in the edit suit, we cut the bits we needed and we put them in the orders. The advantage of doing this was that it saved time, there was also a disadvantage which is, sometimes the cutting and putting in order, might not fit on the right time. The other thing that went well in my film was the match on action shot we used it twice and I think both times it was perfect. We used a variety of shots, the best one was the zoom in on the hands. It was a zoom of two people shaking hands, which was a very good way of ending the scene.


I think the bit where we could improve on was the walk at the beginning, it was very slow and that made it look like as if I am doing it for the camera, it didn’t look very realistic. It was very slow, normally slow things build tension, but here I don’t think it did because people didn’t know what was happening and it was the first shot. If it was in the middle then it would have been ok because we would of know most of the story by then. That’s the shot which we could on improve on and make it better.


I think sound would was a problem as well, we could of added sound to the bits where There was dialogue. It would have looked much better. We just used diegetic Sound, which is the actual thing in the film. That’s another bit where we could improve on.


To make it look better we could have used a prop in it, which we didn’t do. That’s another area we could improve on. We thought it would look better if it was simple but sometimes simple always doesn’t look the best. We didn’t use many camera movements, which is a disadvantage because we should have used it, to make it look much better. I think we only used one which was where I stand near the door and the camera tilts up. By adding somewhere camera movements, the video would have looked much better and more professional, it would of also looked as if we know all the media concepts.

·         Ill Manors is a hip hop protest song by English singer and songwriter Plan B.

·         The track was released in the United Kingdom on 25 March 2012 as the lead single from the Ill Manors soundtrack, a film which Plan B also directed. The song was written in reaction to the 2011 riots across England, and specifically Plan B's perception of "society's failure to nurture its disadvantaged youth.

·          Ill Manors received mostly positive reviews from music critics and peaked at number six on the UK Singles Chart.

·          In October 2012, the song won the Q Award for Best Track

·         The music video for "Ill Manors" was filmed on 17 February 2012 and was directed by Yann Demange

·         Ill Manors received general acclaim from music critics. At aggregate review website Metacritic the album attains an average score of 83 out of 100.

What techniques does the video use to establish the setting and engage the audience?
In Ill Manors loads of techniques have been used to establish the setting and engaged the audience, such as: shots, editing, sound, and background all of this is used to get the message across. In the video they have used of long and medium, shots to show us the setting of the video and to connote what the film is about. The reason why they have used these shots is because you could almost show everything in the background, and the producer of the video wanted the audience to see the background is because he wants to show all the graffiti, vandalism, crime, and violence happening in the background. The reason why is was important for the producer of the video to show that in the background is because he wants to show us or wants us to think about the film and what the message that he wants us to understand.
Another thing that is used to engage the audience and to establish the setting is editing. The producer has used editing to engage the audiences. He has used fast editing because the target audience is teenagers and they normally get attracted by fast things, so that’s why the producer has used fast editing so he could engage the audience.  Editing is very important in making any clip. You could do anything with editing. You could also make the audience suggest a meaning with editing.  In Ill Manors everything is in a fast speed, this is done because the producer wants us to have that feeling that the video is about violence and the people in it mean something.
The reason why sound is very useful and important in this video is because this video connotes violence, crime, vandalism, and all of the negative points, that’s why sound is very important because it expands on all of them points. It is also that scary tune playing at them back which suggests that it’s about crime and it gives a negative stereotype.  The thing that really engages the audience in this clip is the lyrics; they are all about negative points and are suggesting negative things about politics. This would attract its specific target audience, which are teenagers, and the song is sung in a rap style, which teenagers always love. This would make them love the clip and would make them go watch the film. It also engages its audience.
The background is used in the music video to establish the setting and engage the audience. The background is mostly places where there is graffiti everywhere, which connotes all the negative points and it also gives us the bad stereotype of the people in the video which are all teenagers.  This engages the younger audience of the film because they love things like this, it would pull them in. All the background establishes the setting, and it suggests the bad stereotype of London,  the audience start thinking this because they get brained washed by the music video, the thing that pulls them in the video are the bad locations and scary places, where all the drug dealing happen and where all the crime and violence takes place.
 How is gender/ethnicity/age represented in the video?
In the music video gender is represented by showing loads of teenage boys. In the video most of the characters, nearly all are boys; the reason for this is because boys are normally into violence, crimes, and all the negative things. That’s why they have use boys in the video to give them a bad stereotype. There are only a few girls.  It also gives a dominant representation of young teenagers and it makes the audience think that is this the age group who always cause some problem.  The reason why they have used boys rather than girls is because when you see a group of boys standing together with their hood’s on it gives a moral panic in the mind of whoever is walking past, but if you see a group of girls standing there you won’t feel as scared because we know that girls are normally better than boys and everyone expects more from girls than they do from boys. 
In the video they have used a mixture of ethnicity, such as white and black, the reason for this is because they want to gives us that bad stereotype of them people. The reason why they have black people in it because the news always shows or uses black people as trouble makers, and show them as if they are up to something and they reason why plan b has used black people in the video is because it’s easy for him to get his message across. He wants to show all of them people in the video as trouble makers, and the reason he has black people in it is because he knows that black people have already got a bad representation and if he uses them then it’s easy for him to say that these people are going to cause problem, not only him but then the audience would start thinking that look there’s black people in the video something is going to happen. They create a bad stereotype of black people as they are known as trouble makers. In the music video teenaged age’s people are represented as bad people and trouble makers. They have showed young children smoking and others drinking or having a bottle in their hand, to represent them as bad people or bad influence.
 In what ways is the video typical of music videos and what values does it promote?
The value that are being promoted in the music video is supporting working class people, because what the video connotes is that why are rich people treated well rather than the middle class.  The video all anti-government which means that it is against the government because they do not like how the people who live in a council estate are being treated.  The genre is hip-hop. They genre convections in this video which makes it a typical music video, is through fast editing, main character, and themes about struggles
Who does this text/artist appeal to and why?
 The social group classification group for this music video is group E, which are the people who are taking state benefit. The psycho graphic group that this video appeals to is strugglers and reformers. The reason for this is because the people showed in the video are addicted to drugs and alcohol and the people who are addicted to drugs and alcohol struggle in life and are known as strugglers.  The video is also for reformers because they are the people who are normally looking for freedom and they want to be independent, and in this video the people are like that they are looking for freedom as they connote that they are not being treated equally. I think that this is the right groups which appeal to this video.

explorers

I think this commercial is aimed at people who want to explore new things. The people who want to fit them self’s in the new generation. Any new product that comes out they would want it straight away, because they want to discover new things and new technology. The reason why I think that this video matches the sub heading, explorers is  because it shows a group of people who look very interested in Samsung galaxy s3 and because it’s a new product that has recently came out, it looks as they are waiting to buy it. They sound so excited about it.  They look as if they love new things and they are adventures people.
Mainstreamers
This commercial is aimed at people who want seek security, the reason is that they want to protect them self’s from anything. The reason why this is a good commercial for mainstreamers is because they are the people who want tight security and good protection on them self’s because they want to protect them self’s from any danger.  This would influence them to buy it because they want security.
Resigned
I think that this little clip is aimed at resigned people who are normally old people. In this little clip it shows loads of old people playing with the photo booth which normally teenaged group of people use to make their pictures look funny and amusing, but in this clip of people are using it, this show that they are enjoying life as much as they can because they know that their time is nearly up.  So it shows them enjoying life as much as they can, even if the thing they are using is not for their age.
Aspirer's
I think this commercial is aimed a group of people who would try something by because of the looks not the actual product. The group of people are called aspirers; they are the people who would try something because of its looks, not by the actual product. I think aspirer’s people would try this beer because of the successful commercial, because the commercial is good that’s why it would influence them to try it and they would.  They would try the beer because of the attractive commercial.
Reformers
I think this is for the reformers group because they love freedom and they are aware of the taste. They want to open they are independent. In this advert it shows a group o f people who want to enjoy life they are chilling with some of their mates and having wine. It shows how free they want to be, they also want to be away from the busy world and want a relaxing life.

Sports Car
In this commercial sports car are aimed at women, firstly she is called a driver but then she shows her driving skills. The reason why this is a successful commercial is because woman for the first time are represented as strong objects. This would encourage other females to be like that female in the commercial. If the male was driving the car, then the commercial would aim at males, but here in this advert the male is sitting down and showed to be so scared and worried because of the females driving.
Men could also be targeted at a commercial like this if they change the representation and the way they are in the commercial, because there are many ways how you could represent men, you could represent them as strong, weak, or emotional. There are many ways how you could aim a commercial like this at men, you could have a man in the car with his wife or girlfriend and he is driving at the speed of 90 mph, then that would attract a wide range men to do that as well, because they would want to be like that.

Bottled beer                                                                                                                                           
In this commercial men are the target audience; it shows men as being desperate for beer. I can tell this by the way the guys were ripping the wallpaper to get to their head to the other side just to get the beers. This shows how desperate they are for it and they could do anything. It is very hard to fit a woman in this commercial because most women don’t die for beer, whereas men would do anything to get beer.

You could represent this in a different way so that it appeals to woman by changing the slogan and images, you could also have a group of girls drinking together. This would show that not only men can drink, women can also drink as well and it would also tell people that women are equal to men. 
Toilet paper

This commercial is mainly targeted at woman because they are the ones normally shown as the house wife’s, which means they are the ones who are going to look after the house. So this commercial is aimed at them, because they are the ones who would look after the house. In the commercial they have shown the woman and the cute dog, which suggest that they are both looking after the house.
You could make that advert for men as well, if only they didn’t have that dog. If they had something different than a dog then it might attract men. They could also change the colour to make it attractive to men.  
Deodeorant
This commercial is targeted at women because it shows women using it. Its edit would pull the audiences in. it would make them question themselves, but on the other hand if it was a lynx advert, it would apply more to a male audience. The smile on her face says it all; it shows how happy she is and how cool she feels. There are loads of commercials for men as well.
hi fi system
In this commercial men are targeted more than women because men would usually listen to loud music and they can handle loud music more than women.  Men would normally get attracted to these kinds of things.  If it was a women they would normally be attracted more to a a something which will be useful to them such as makeup or something.
You could attract more of a woman audience by changing the colour of the background and you could change the music. If it is a slow pace music then it would normally be aimed at women.
Cleaning product                                                                                                                                     
This cleaning product would mostly be aimed at women because they are mostly known as house wives, and cleaning might be one of their job. So this commercial is targeted at women. It would make them buy it because the director of this commercial has used a powerful women in the commercial saying good things about that cleaner, and normally women would  trust women  more than men so if a women has said it, they are most probably going to buy it. in this poster commercial they show this women as being so serious about what she is doing. And they make her look so passionate about her job.
I don’t think men would actually be attracted by cleaning products, even if they have another man who is cleaning to house with some sort of cleaning product. The only men that would clean or buy that product are the group of men who love keeping things clean and tidy, but that’s if they are the people who love tidy stuff, because normally men are always represented as dirty and messy. 
Trainers
This commercial is aimed at young boys because they are the group who are mostly interested in trainers and in what they wear. The director of the commercial has used a young boy trying to show off his skills with his new trainers, this would have an effect on the audience because they would be like why can’t I buy these and be like that. It would make him buy it. In this poster it shows or suggests the power of these trainers, the way it is edited is very professional because it makes the audience want to buy it.  The reason why this commercial is successful is because it shows the things that the trainers are used for and its bet features.
If you want to aim a trainers commercial at woman is by changing the colour or advertising pink trainers, you could also change the music which is playing on the background to attract woman. 
game console
This commercial is targeted at all aged men’s because it shows a teenager playing it and then the man himself says can I play with it, which shows that all men would want some sort of entertainment in life. Even if your 50.  The director has made it funny and he has made it very professional, he has gave a desperate representation to boys, it shows him playing his game while he is in the toilet, this shows how desperate he is, and then the funny bit is when the guy is reaching up to see what it happening. All of that shows the desperateness. This poster shows everything which could be explored in the game console.  The humour of this commercial makes it look successful.
Game console in commercials are normally targeted at boys because they are the ones who are in to games. If however you want to target girls for game you could have a commercial where a girl is playing a girly game, rather than FIFA because girls will never be attracted by FIFA. 
Air line


This commercial is aimed at men and women because they both can do it, it’s not that a boy can buy that ticket and a girl can’t. It is aimed at both genders and it explains how cool it is to be in it. The reason why this commercial is successful is because of the beginning of the commercial, when the show everyone lying down and later they have connected it with the bit in the plain, it all connects. YOU can't really target a specific men or woman for this job because, both can do it.
