Exam practise questions

Guardians TV advert

Media form: what techniques does the ad use to persuade the audience to consume the guardian?
There are loads of techniques used in this advert to persuade the audience to consume the guardian newspaper.  The first thing which would engage the audience in to the advert is the music. The music right at the beginning is very powerful. It starts off slow and when the camera zooms into the bowl; the music gets faster and faster. This affect creates tension and it also creates enigma codes which came from Barthes. Enigma codes are normally used in TV adverts and trailers, the reason why they are used is because they leave that tension in the audience mind that what is going to happen next. The music later on gets louder, and then suddenly you see the guardian newspaper come up and they start typing up on the newspaper, here they are trying to say that the guardian newspaper would update the latest news start away if anything important happens. Later on it shows the lady on the guardian website, here they are trying to show that you could use the internet to connect with them as well, you don’t always need to go and buy the newspaper.
Then they have used special affects to grab the audience attention in, they show on screen loads of comments and people socialising about the news. They show one person then they show 4 and then in the next shot they show a wide range of people, they are trying to show that there news has got loads of people interested. Then the next affect which will pull in the audience to consume the guardian is the bit when the doctors walk in the house and there is writing over them saying is killing an intruder ever justified, then it says yes or no, so they are trying to get the audience involved in this little story they have made up, here E-media is used because that’s the only platform which will allow the audience to get involved in the story. The main message of this ad is that the guardian newspaper would allow you to get the latest new, and would let you get involved and show us and tell them what you think, they also show that you don’t always have to go and get the newspaper, you could go on the guardian website or you could download their app on your smart phones. This is very attractive as loads of people won’t want to spend money on a newspaper everyday just for that day.

The news is represented very positive because the main aim of news is to get the information about the issue to the audience which the ad does, it tells them that the pigs have being caught, what you are as audience going to do. They audience take the news very serious and protest for the pigs. You can see loads of people protesting for the pigs which mean that they are taking the news very serious. In this advert the news is taken very serious because they show the pigs being sentence, that’s why the audience are very interested and protest for the pigs.  The reason why the people are protesting is because the pigs have been given a negative representation and a bad stereotype, they are being called murders, that’s the reason the people are protesting because they know that the pigs won’t do that. They know that the pigs are always good that’s why they are protesting.
Media institution:

I think that the guardian newspaper appeals to a high class demographics, so people A/B class people, high professional working class, in big companies. The reason why I think they are the target audience for this newspaper is because they can afford it. I don’t think people with low income would go and buy a newspaper which costs more than a £1 because they won’t want to waste money as they are getting less income anyway.  They are the people who would want to get involved with the society as they live in it, they would challenge the stereotype, and they would challenge things. They have the power to do things like this, the age group would be from 24-42 this would be the audience group for the guardian newspaper. The psychographics would be aspires because they have the power to judge something by its looks not by the actual thing.

There are loads of codes and convections used in the game trailer to hook its audience to tell the audience what the genre is about. The codes and convections help the trailer to tell its audience what it is about, the fast editing and quick shots in the trailer connote that it is something to do with action, it hooks up the audience.  The music also is a fact pace music which gives the clue about the genre. The voice over at the beginning is not that clear, which is done deliberately because they want the audience to listen to it very carefully and want them to pay full attention. Then the other thing which engages the audience is the text which appears after every two shots to make the audience read more about the information they are giving them.  mise en scene in this film trailer would be props, the props used in the trailer to establish the texts genre are guns the bombs, the things which would happen in a war. These are the typical convections a trailer would use to hook and tell its audience what the trailer is about.

War is represented as being very serious in this trailer; it is defiantly given a negative stereotype that is bad. They show things been bombed which has happened in real life, they want to give s flash back of what has happened in the past, and know are trying to convince the audience to buy it to experience how it would've been in war.  I think war has been given a negative stereotype because they are fighting and killing each other over nothing.

This text appeals to young teenagers even though the audience is from 18+, the young audience would get their parents to buy the game for them as it appeals to them. They are the audience what like these kinds of things; this genre of action really engages them as they are the ones always wanting to fight. The reason they would buy it is because they are getting pleasures from it, if they weren’t getting pleasures from it they won’t want to buy.

SkyFall case study 2

This is the Empire magazine cover for SkyFall, this poster really attracted me that is the why I have used it to analyse it. This front cover looks very attractive, it has loads of codes and convections on it, which would help attract the audience. The reason why they are showing the genre in James Bond hand is because they want to show what the genre is about. Once to audience looks at the gun they would straight away know that the film has action in it. One little thing connotes loads of other things. Just the gun itself connotes and has loads of different meaning and reason why it is there.  The producer of the cover wants to through the genre at the audience, that’s what the gun connotes, it tells the audience or starts to give enigma codes to the audience. the main image is of James Bond himself, they want the audience to know that the film is about him, they have the title of the film in the middle of the cover because it’s an magazine and they have to get the magazine name up on the top, which they have done. They have got the masthead, Empire behind Bonds head; the reason why they have done this is because Empire is a well known magazine and just by looking at the E people would know that it is an Empire magazine.

Underneath the title they have a red box and to make it stand out the have written the text in white, what it says is that 50 years of Bond, this tells the audience that James Bond has been there for a long time and that he has become a very famous actor.    It also tells the audience that James Bond has been there for time, which means all of his films are super hit films, it also tells them that he has officially become a professional actor and if you watch his film you are not going to get bored. To celebrate the 50 years of him in the film industry they have put his pictures from all of his different films.  In the entire picture he is looking smart that’s the thing which attracts the audience to watch his film.

In this poster he has been given a very serious representation, I could tell this by the way he is looking directly at the camera. If he wasn’t serious then he won’t be looking at the camera, so you could tell that he is given a serious representation. This also tells us that he has been given a positive stereotype. The picture gives Bond a very risk taking representation as well. The institution for this magazine is Empire, it is there magazine they are representing SkyFall.

The target audience for this Poster of film is people from 12; the film is given a 12 certificate. I don’t think that 12 year olds with look at this magazine. Older aged people will. They are the people who will have a look at this magazine to find out more detail. I think to be specific people aged 20+ would look at this magazine, the target audience below this age would just watch the film. The people aged 20+ would actually read about the film before watching it. The young audience would not read about the film, then think 20 times whether or not to watch the film, they will just go and watch it. They have made the cover in an olden time style because they want the exact audience to watch it.

In the interview Bond says that he is not afraid to make more films like this in the future, he says that he is always bond even at home or anywhere. When he says that the audience would think that he takes his role very seriously and he always produces fantastic films and wants to carry on making films like that. In the interview he has been given a really positive stereotype of him. They also show a bit where he says after I watch the film, I think why have I done this scene like this, why am I standing like this. This shows that after doing a film he always challenges himself, that’s the thing that gives him a positive stereotype. Normally what people do is look for the best bits and describe themselves as perfect, whereas there are loads of mistakes which they don’t talk about. Bond says I could have done better. After the audience look at this interview they would think that Bond is a really nice person because he’s not talking about his positive bits in the film, but he’s talking about his negative bits. That’s the thing which the audience would love about him and they could think he is a really nice guy.
The main purpose of this interview is to get Bonds Ideologies across to the audience and what he thinks and believes. The institution company that interviewed him wants the audience to know his believes. The target audience for this interview would be older aged people, like people aged 24 and above. The demographics for this interview would be B, C, C1 the reason why I think this is because they are the people who are well educated and are earning a good amount of money. They are the people who would watch this interview. The physiographic for this interview would be aspires and explores, the reason why I think this is because aspires would watch it because James Bond is in it, and explores would watch it to because they want to explore new things.
The company that interview him is showbiz 411; they are the company that got Bonds message across to the audience and his ideologies.  In the show James Bonds gets asked loads of questions, this is because all the questions answer the audience main questions about the film. They also promote his old films in the interview and his next film which is going to come out. He gets asked a question that Will Bond films continue? And Bond says that yes as they say at the end of SkyFall to be continued, this gives a hint to the audience that there is going to be more of his film and each time there are getting better and better. Most of the interviews with Ben Drew and James
Bond are similar as they all try getting there ideologies across.

There are loads of ways to promote a film and one way which E-media promote the film is by 007 games. The media has made loads of James Bond games, in which he himself is in it. The target audience would be all young people from ages 12-18/19 they are the people who would play his game. They would have to get their parents to get it for them which mean that they would know about it as well. This is synergy as they are using the game to promote the film.
The game represents James Bond as a very hardworking and a serious guy, which he is in his films as well. James Bond throughout his life has been given a positive stereotype, he is like a role model to the younger audience and that’s why the parents would buy the game for their children.  As he is a superhero all the younger audience would want to be like him, and would get inspired by him.
What the game does is that it gets the audience involved in promoting the film and game. The way the promote the film is by the more games sold of 007 means the more the audience is liking it, this gets others to buy it as well. its all about promoting the film, once the children play the game and complete it they would defiantly want to go and watch his next film because they loved the game, and they would also wait for the next game to come out so they could buy it.

case study 2

There are loads of codes and convections in this SkyFall Facebook page. All of the codes and convecrtion attract the audience in to the film. the reason why E-media is the famuousest platform across all three platforms I think, is because E-media allows the audience to get involved with film. the other two platforms do not allow the audience to intract with the film, as E-media does. It allows the audience to like things about the film dislike things, it allows them to leave their views about the film, all of there views count. Other people sometimes decide to watch the film or not based on the reviews it gets from loads of diffferent people. Some people decide wether or not to watch it deciding on the rating it has been given by the audience. this means that the audience get a chance to intract with the film. if someone new enters the facebook page and looks at the amount of likes the page has got, it would make him watch it as he would think that it is really a good film, as it has so many likes.
The codes and convections promote the genreof the film, in this example you could see a picture of Bond himself with a gun in the poster. If someone very new, who has never seen a Bond film would get a clue of what the genre of the film would be. The clothes in the picture, how smart he is dressed with connote what the genre is to the audience. even the narravtive, the aqudience might start thinking of the plot of the film before even seeing it.  there are two posters in the facebook homepage for SkyFall. In both James Bond himself is in them, in the top one you could see him in action but the other one h is standing there very smart with his gun in his hand. this would give him a representation of a very smart  and brave guy, as he is looking directly at the camera. This makes the audience think that he is very brave, so they would connoting that he could not be the villien in the film as he is not scard. They would know that he is the hero or something because he is noit scard, the reason why the villien would not look at the camera is because they would be scard because of what they have doen in the film.
The certifcate of the film is writen their on the homepage, it says 12 this tells and informs people who can and who cant watch the film. this is very important for the parents to know because some parents are very strict and don’t want their children to watch something which they cant watch. It also gives an idea of how and wht they film could incclude as all ages have a limit they could go up to.
I don’t think that there are any differences in the Ill Manors facebook homeoage to SkyFalls because its free to make and how ever they want to make it, the only difference would be that what goes in both pages to attract the audience, so the different pictures the different videos. Thata probably the only difference. There would be loads of similarties, as the layout is the same, the  fonts used are the same. So I don’t think there are much similarites and differences.
This is the official poster used to promote SkyFall, this is the poster used for billboards as well. Billboards is a very useful way to promote the fill to the audience, they could be everywhere for example you could see this in a train station, on the side of the bus, on the middle of the road where there are posters , on motorways, and many more.  The reason why these places are very famous to promote something is because loads of people walk past them every day, and they would see it. Loads of people go to the train station every day, so they have a big chance to have a look at this poster. They would get attracted by it because of how it is designed and laid out.
This poster looks very attractive because of its features and design. The lay out is very attractive as well for example they have the 007 behind James Bond.  The reason why they have it this way is because 007 is very popular and famous now because it has been there for many years and it has made loads of films. That’s the reason why they have the 007 sign behind him because loads of people are already familiar with it that’s why they have it behind him.
The reason why they have dust on his picture right the bottom is because they want to make it look real, they want to show that he skid and then the dust went on him. These are just the typical codes and convection the producer of this poster has used to make it look professional.  If you look very carefully the institution company names are on the poster. This is done because they want to show and tell who is involved in the film. I think it has to be on there because there the companies that helped making the films in many ways.
The background colour on the poster is very simple as it is white. I think the reason they have put it in white is because they want to make everything else stand out, because any other colour would stand out on top of white. That’s the reason why I think this has been done.
The font colour and size is very simple because it looks nice. The black on top of the white looks very professional and smart. I think this would attract the audience because they are very catchy colours white stand out together. This would be very useful because they have the release date on their which they want the audience to never forget so they could go a watch it in cinemas.

In BBC interview Daineil                Craig talks about the film and he talks about what they did in them 4 years they wern’t making the film and what they are going to do next. He says that the 4 years they wern’t making a film, but they were not resting as well. He says they were planning everything for the next film. this means tht they had a really good amount of time to make this film SkyFall, that’s why it is a super hit and was planed very carefully. What this connotes is that the amount od time put in, would pay off later.
Bond says that this film SkyFall was planed very carefully, that’s why they came up with an fantastic script, whereas he describes his old films as not very good because he didn’t know most of the time what he was doing. He also says that the deal for him is to make bigger and better ones. This shows that this film is really going to be a hit. Whatever he says promotes the film, he says that SkyFall was the best film he has made. This attracts the audience and mnakes them want to watch the film as it is very famuous and popular.
The question he got asked was how has Bond be very successful over the past decade, he says each time we make a film we wont not only the British people to be attracted but we want the whole world to be attracted to it, that’s the thing which has kept Bonds films very successful.  He also says that without Bond in the industry the place would be a sadder place. Here he is trying to attract the audience to watch the bond films as they mean a lot to this planet.
In this interview Bond is represented as a positive person to the planet, as he is making very full of enertainment movies. The reason why he is given a positive stereotype because they want to represent him to the audience as a hero and they want the audience to think and admire him aa a hero.
The interview tries to give and to sell his idealogies to the audience as they are very important because he has been the super-hero for everyone. Bond ius given a very good stereotype because his idealogies are very good and mean a lot to the audience.

Case-study 2

Sky fall is an action, adventure, and crime film. The film was released on 26 October 2012. The film was directed by Sam Mendes, it was produced by Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli. The studio which was used was Eon production. The film was distributed by Metro Goldwyn Mayer, and Columbia pictures.  Daniel Craig as James Bond, Javier Bardem as Silva,  Ralph Fiennes as Gareth Mallory,  Naomie Harris as Eve, Bérénice Marlohe as Severine,  Albert Finney as Kincade, and Judi Dench as M.
The films running time is 143 minutes, the language used in the film is English, and the budget was $150-200 million. The films box office was $1,108,283,816. The film is given a certificate of 12A.

There are loads of similarities and differences between Skyfall and Ill Manors, one of the biggest differences is that they both have a completely different budget. Skyfall is a big budget blockbuster, and an Ill manor is a low budget film. Skyfall has a budget of $150-200 million, and Ill Manors has a budget of £100,000. This is one of the biggest differences. There is a huge amount of difference in the budget. From the budget you could easily tell which film would be the better one. The more money put in to make a film the better the film would be.
Both films have something to do with crime in it, but the crime in Skyfall is much better than Ill Manors. They make it look real in Skyfall. In both films it does look real but there is a difference. The crime in Ill Manors s not that realistic, as it is in Skyfall.
The one similarity is that the both have a similar genre, not the same but it’s similar. They both have crime in it.
The storyline/plot is much different from each other, even though they have one similarity in the genre, but they have completely different stories
The acting is much better in Skyfall than Ill Manors. The reason behind this is the actors. The actors in Skyfall are professional actors, but the actors in Ill Manors are not professional actors. Only a few actors are professional in Ill Manors. Acting is one of the main bits of the film to engage the audience, or to pull the audience in the film. If the acting does not look real the audience would not

As soon as you enter the SkyFall website the first thing that you would look at is the mast head at the top of the page. The reason why you would look there as soon as you go on the website is because the mast head stands out. It’s not too bold and not too thin. It’s in a normal size font. The thing that makes it stand out is the colour it is in, it is in a white colour and the white stands out on top of the background colour which is black. We could call all of these features, codes and convection. These are the things that make them stand out.
The next thing we would look at is the tag line right underneath the mast head. It’s a very catchy tagline, it says “for your consideration” this means that they are trying to say that they are choosing for us or they are trying to advise us to watch the film. In all ways they are trying to sell the film to us. They want us to watch the film. The tagline they have used is very catchy, it engages the audience in it, and it makes them buy the film from the website.
Then the audience would look at the links or the boxes going in one line. The order that they go in is, the first one says Awards, about, gallery, videos, extras, downloads, and partners. Each of them lets the audience explore the film.  It gives a chance to the audience to have a look and read things about the films. These boxes are called codes and convection as well because it engages the audience to have a look and explore the film in their free time
.
Then the next thing the audience are likely to have a look at is the very attractive and very thoughtfully made thing by the producer of this website. What he has done to attract and engage the audience in the film is that he has made a slide show with the original sound track of the film playing.  The music starts playing as soon as anyone enters the website. This is a very interested thing because as the audience is exploring the film, they have some entertainment going on as well. This pulls the audience in the film because the music that is playing is very smooth and attractive. As soon as the music is finsh it starts playing again.  The music goes exactly right with the slides, there are around 6 slides and all of them are full with interesting information. The first slide talks about all the awards the film or the sound tracks have won by now. The second slide has a picture of James Bond himself and it says get tickets and show times. The third slide talks about the review about the film.  The fourth slide talks about the sound track playing in the background, it says it s available on ITunes. The fifth slide lets the audience explore some of the videos of SkyFall. The lat slide lets the audience to watch the trailer. All 6 slides are very attracting and engaging. It pulls in the audience. The audience could also click on any slide if they want to read it carefully because the slides change every 5 seconds or something. That’s why the audience could go in and explore it very carefully.

Underneath that they have three boxes with different information’s including in them. They help the audience in many ways, firstly they might give some information the audience is looking for. The last thing down the page is all the institution companies which were involved in the film; they have the distributor’s logo and many logos at the bottom. They even have the ratings certificate, which gives the audience an idea who can watch the film and who can’t.
The last thing which is right at the top right hand corner of the page is all the social networking links; this allows the audience to get involved in the film. That’s why it they have links saying, share, like, follow us, and visit us at Facebook. All of these convections let the audience get involved with the film.  The audience would like the pages and follow them this makes them popular, and if anyone looks at their page they might think SkyFall is a really good movie they should watch it as well.

There are loads of media aspects in the trailer of SkyFall. You can’t call that a simply trailer, there is so much put it the trailer to hook and to engage the audience.  In the trailer they have got fast shots, music which starts off slow and rises and rises, they have a good wide range of different shots. They have got loads of codes and convections in them. The lighting, sound, Mise-en-scene, character representation, all of these things attract the audience to watch the film. It makes them, forces them because of the serious editing used in the trailer. The audience would think that if the trailer is such good then how would the movie be.
The trailer starts off with a close up of James Bonds eyes; this shows the audience how serious he is right from the beginning. Then there are loads of close ups and medium shots. The editing is very quick shots; the reason why the director has done this is because he wanted to create tension in the audience mind. The fast editing makes the audience think that the film is full of action and full of interesting bits.

9 seconds in the trailer we see a very beautiful shot were Bond jumps on one train to another, the camera is from the bottom, and it pans with the train.  I think this shot attracts the audience as it is a very nicely done shot. The audience after watching this shot would want to watch the film.  The other shot which I find very attractive and engaging is the shot were Bond drops off the train, and the producer has showed him dropping very slowly, that won’t happen in really life because if you throw someone from a top of the building, they would just drop very hard and fast to the ground and would eventually die. Here it’s a bit different; the reason why I think the producer has showed him dropping down in slow motion is to build tension.  It’s been done to make the audience think that if he dies how the film is going to work out later on.  After that the institutions companies logo come up this is done because they want to show the audience who and which companies are involved with the film. Sometimes this has a positive effect of this on the audience they think that it’s going to be a good film because of the companies involved in making the film.

Just by looking at the trailer the audience would know straight away that it’s a high budget blockbuster film because of the actions scenes in the film and because of all the explosions. All of these convections engages the younger audience, so like from 12-24 because they are the ones that are mostly in action things more than older aged people.
The music in the trailer starts off slow and it rises and rises with the shots. Each time the shots change and get interesting and interesting, that’s when music is used to pull the audience in the trailer. The producer wants the audience to feel the film. Music could very easily attract the audience, and this trailer it has. The reason why the music rises and rises is because they want to build more and more tension, so that when the trailer is finsh, it makes the audience want to watch the film again.

At the end of the trailer the music is at a point where its gets so fast because of the three last scene they are one after the other. After that the title comes up at the end. The reason why the title is at the end is because that’s the last thing the producer wants the audience to remember. The reason why that’s the last things he wants them to remember is because he wants them to go an watch it when it comes out, and by putting the title and release date at the end makes them remember when it would come out.

L.R

L.R: ensure you cover synergy- make a paragraph on this.

Synergy is used when promoting Ill Manors, it's used a lot while promote both the film and the music album. Synergy is used in all three media platforms, for example there is a poster where Ben Drew himself is sitting down with a cigarette in his mouth and he is promoting his music Album as it is called Ill Manors. On the other hand Ben Drew’s film is also called Ill Manors. This means that while promoting the music album, they are also promoting the film. This is called synergy, when you cross promote something. In this case in the poster the music album is trying to be promoted, also the film is promoted.

Slide 4

How are representations contrasted across the three platforms?
How are characters/stars in the film represented in:

This is the official poster for Ill Manors as it has most of the important things which they need to get across to the audience. The character which we could see on this poster is one of the main characters, Aaron. He was given a friend role; his friend in the film was Ed. Aaron is represented as the bad side of the young youth in the poster, which means the negative side.  The reason why I can say this is because he has a gun in his hand which means he’s up to something. In this poster you could also say that he is afraid of himself or knows that he is on the wrong path, as he is not looking directly at the camera. The reason why the producer of this poster has done this is because they want to show that he is not powerful, he does not have power in his hand. The only power he has is that gun. If Aaron was a powerful man he would not have been looking away from the camera, he would have been looking directly at the camera or the audience. The other thing which we could connote is that he knows that he is wrong or is on the bad path, that’s why he is ashamed of himself and is looking away. He is given the seriously look, but he feels guiltily about the things he has done in life. The reason why there is a council flat in the background is because they want to express his background and that he is one of them who live in council houses.

In this poster you could see the producer of Ill Manors, Ben Drew. He is sitting on top of a council flat with a cigarette in his mouth. If an old person looks at this poster they would straight away think badly about this person in the poster because he has a cigarette in his mouth and he has a hood on. They would state him as a (chav) or him as a bad young adult because of what they are seeing. Ben Drew himself has been given a bad representation because of what he is showing in the poster. The reason why he would be given a bad representation is because he has a cigarette in his mouth and he has a hood on. That’s the only reason why he would get a bad representation. Print media gives the characters from Ill Manors a bad representation because of what they show to the audience. Ben Drew himself is not looking directly at the camera because he is feeling ashamed of himself because of the cigarette in his mouth. He is given a bad stereotype

Broadcast plays a huge role in representing the characters and the stars. In the trailer we see nearly most of the characters and all of them are given a bad representation. There are shown as they are useless to the environment and they harm the environment. The reason for this is shown in the trailer where all the characters as bad as each other. They all have a negative stereotype and a negative role to play. This makes the audience think badly about them. The things that give the characters a bad representation in the trailer is the codes and convections, props and there action. For example drugs, guns, sex, gangs, fights, violence, and drinking. These are all the things which give the characters a bad stereotype. All the codes and convections are used to give the bad representation to the characters. The media uses loads of aspects to give them a bad representation and a bad stereotype.

In the Jonathan Ross show Ben Drew is represented as a guy who failed most of his life and now has chosen the right path because of the points he has in his mind. He wants to express his feelings to the nation. Here the media expresses his views and tells the audience things about him. Now as he is becoming a famous guy the media are presenting him as a very good guy. He has attended loads of shows like this and all of them support his views and help him promote his film and music career as well.  The reason why some times the media represent Ben Drew as a very great lad is because he is helping little children or young teenagers to choose the right path as he knows that’s the time when they get influenced by everything. He says I want to help the young people living in council flats because they get less respect from the society. They make the show funny and Jonathan might make some points which could be serious but they make the whole situation into a joke. In the show he is wearing normal clothing which means he is being represented as a cool and relaxed guy.

Here as we could see that Ben Drew has won an award for what he is producing, here the media are representing him as a very successful man as they are interviewing him while he comes and with that award. They want to show the audience how he is becoming successful. There are many ways which the media represents him but in this one they show him as becoming very successful. The reason why they interview him here is because of the awards he has won.

Q2) In most of the interviews and shows Ben Drew has been on, the media have given him a good representation because of his idea. Whenever he talks about his career in the shows he tells the audience that he wants to help the young teenagers living in council houses, because they don’t have much support as the rich society people and the result of this is them going in the bad path and doing what they are told not to. Here the media tells us that he is a good role model for the young children. He believes that they could be successful in life as well if they have the support with them and he’s there to give them support. He states that he was like that as well and he had to choose the right path and today he is a big star and really famous artists. Ben Drew’s values and ideologies are those young teenagers who are less fortunate can also be successful in life. He says that he wants to help them.
The reason why they are presented to the audience this way is because they when the audience see himself speaking about his ideologies then they would believe it, but if it is not himself then no one would believe it. Everyone knows that most of the things on the news are planned then shown to the audience. That’s the reason why he has attended loads of interviews and been asked about his views.  The audience do get a chance to get involved with these ideas and points, through E-media. They could get involved by using social networking site as Ill Manors is everywhere now. The audience could go and leave their views in the comment box. In a way the audience here would be promoting the film and they are giving feedback to the director.

Q3 The print and E-media have similar thoughts as both would be promoting the same idea, the poster above which I have spoken about would be on the social networking site as well, as it is the main poster for Ill Manors. This might connote to the audience that he might be one of the main characters as he is used most on the promotion for Ill Manors. I think that there are loads of differences in the characters and stars in the film. As Aaron is becoming the better character through the film and Ed still has the bad ego character role. Normally you would see black raced people using drugs and selling drugs but in this film you see that white and black people are using drugs, this shows that Ben Drew has challenged the stereotype. In the film East London is now represented as a bad place as the film shows us because it is all set in East London. The similarities are that Ben Drew is trying to show us his view and his ideologies through each bit we see to do with him or the film.

Case study questions

How does the industry promote the film to audiences using?
· Print media? The industry uses loads of different ways to promote a film to the audiences. The first strategy that they use is print media.  This includes Billboards, magazines, newspapers, and DVD covers.

This is a billboard which was stuck in Greenford; it is a very attractive poster it’s got most of the information which the audiences need to know about the film. It gives the audience the title of the film and album, the release date, and picture of the director himself. Whoever has create this poster has used synergy, this means that they are cross promoting. In this billboard the album is being promoted but on top the film is also being promoted because they both have the same masthead.
This is the DVD cover for Ill Manors. It is a very attractive cover, it has the masthead on it, it has the age rating on it, it has the actor’s names on it, the star rating on it, and the production company’s logo. The reason why these codes and conventions are there is because they want to give most of the main information to the audiences about the film. The reason why each convection is very important is because they each give different information.

This is a magazine page for the film Ill Manors, it talks about the director of the film and the narrative of the film. This is very useful for the audience because it gives them a chance to have a read to find out the background of the film and the director, it gives them information about the director and the narrative. This gives a chance for the audience to find out things. In this article you could see some of the characters and the director himself.  In this page they also talk about the film Ill Manors and it gives information about it.
Broadcast media? This is the second way that the industry uses to promote a film. Broadcasts includes TV, Radio, and DVD. I think that the target audience for these three sections would be old 40+ adults, who sit at home with a cup of coffee and watch TV or listen to the radio. On TV you might see the trailer come on sometimes before the film is released. They show the trailer because they want to attract the audience before the film comes out. The trailer makes loads of people want to watch the film because it attracts them because of the techniques used in the trailer. The things that make the trailer attractive are the editing, sound, characters, etc.
On the radio you much just hear about the film. whoever is presenting the show might talk about the film, or a song from the film might play. This again engages the radio audience for Ill manors which might be old people who listen to the radio, or business men going to work in their car and are listening to the radio.
DVD, in the olden days once a film was released in the cinema the DVD would come out after months and months. In today's time when a film is screening the DVD of it would come out in a week or so. This is because of piracy. The reason why this is done is because people won’t want to go to the cinema to watch a film if they don’t like, but they think it might be worth watching. Or some people might get the DVD because they can watch it whenever but if it is in the cinema it would be gone off in two weeks or so.

This is the DVD front cover, it is very attractive as it has loads of different codes and convections on it. it has a summary of the film, the title, the productions companies logo, age certification. It has it’s masthead on it, it has some pictures of the scenes from the film. All of these codes and convection attract loads the audience. The colours on it are very eye catchy, they would make the audience buy the film as soon as the audience look at the cover.

E-Media? This is the last way which the industry could use to promote a film. Ill Manors uses Emedia, which means they have there own website, their own trailer, they have loads of blogs about the film out there, they are all over the social site networking, they last thing the could have is games, which I don’t think they have yet. All of these things are used to promote a film.  All of them are very useful to promote the film.
This is their Facebook page and it allows people to go on it read things like the page, and explore the film. on the page there is a section on the production company, it has pictures from the film, it allows the audience to buy the film if they want. This also allows other people who the film is not aimed at to have a look at the page and see if they are interested in the film.
What are the key issues and changes taking place in each platform?
To advertise or to promote a film using print your going to have to put money in, because to make the magazines , to make the posters, to print things in newspapers your going to have to pay for them. They won’t be done for free, but if you were promoting something using E-media most of the things are free for example, social networking  website, blogs, reviews, etc. these won’t cost you nothing.
The recent films which screen in cinema’s, come on TV a month later or so, this before never happens. Most people might watch it online. This is one change which is taking place in the broadcast platform. Piracy is just gone to much now, you can get a DVD or something in the same week it comes out. This is a change as well.
They might block loads of the privacy websites, which allow people to watch all latest films for free in the same week. To face these kinds of issues where it is hard to control privacy what they do now is direct to home(DTH). What this means is that when a film is released one of the satalite channels would view the film on the same day as the release in cinema’s. This would have a charge of like £4-5, which if you think about it is nothing compared going to the cinema and paying £8-10. This saves money for the audience and it allows the producer to make a good amount of money and the viewer. This stops loads of people to stop watching the film through privacy and it won’t be a good copy.
How is the film promoted through print, broadcast, E-media?
The film Ill Manors uses all three platforms to promote its film. For broadcast they have their own trailer,  the trailer is very attractive as it attracts the audience. http://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=ill+manors+trailer&oq=ill+manors+&gs_l=youtube.3.1.0l10.3781.9405.0.11627.15.9.2.4.4.0.136.802.4j5.9.0...0.0...1ac.1.Lou2acNSH2c this is the link to the trailer. The trailer is produced before the film comes out, it gives the audience a summary of the film. the trailer uses synergy as they are cross promoting two things the film and the album, the music in the trailer is from the music album. This means they are cross promoting.
They have their own website, they are all over the social networking site as their main target audience is teenagers and the people who use social networking the most are teenagers. This engages the younger audience for the film.  people could go on the website and find out everything about the film. They could read blogs, reviews about the film, they could find out more about the director and his past, they could do all sorts of things. To advertise the film they also have loads of billboards, magazines, newspapers, posters, all of these promote the film. All of these factors have their own audience which they aim at. This means that when the film is being advertised the would appeal to loads of different aged people.
What are the similarities and differences?
The similarities and differences in the three platforms are that for print, everything is on paper, what i mean by this is that everything is on print in hand copy. Whereas broadcast would be all on TV or on radio, you could explain them as whenever you hear something, it means that it’s the broadcast which Is promoting the film. E-Media is the last way which is the promoting bit takes place. Ill Manors has loads of it’s blogs and reviews, it also has the social networking site which the audience could go on and write things. E-madia allows the audience to write things about the film. Then other people could also read it and agree and disagree with their points. I think they all promote the same thing but in different ways. The reason why I think that broadcast is better than print is because broadcast explains to you, whereas print you have to figure out yourself. Broadcast would guid you and explain the whole film to you, but prit won’t. broadcast reaches it audience very quick because it just comes on TV, whereas for print people have to go buy the newspaper or magazine. Print media informs, entertains, escapism. Broadcast informs, entertains, escapism E-media entertains, socialising, informs, escapism

Who is the films target audience, and how do you know?
The target audience for the film is 18-34. The reason why its an 18 film is because it has consistent swearing in it. it has sexual scenes in it, which is strictly for a 18 certificate as the BBFC states. There is drugs and guns used consistently which means that its not appropriate for an 15 certificate, it has to be 18 certificate. For a 15 certificate you can swear, but not consistent  If the swearing is consistent then it has to be an 18 certificate as the BBCF states. Ill Manors also has violence and a lot of sexual scenes in it, which you cannot show in a 15 certificate, you can show violence but you have to stay in limit.
How is the film promoted to its target audience?
To promote the film to its audience using print, they might have loads of different codes and convections. I don’t think that there is one audience for print, for each section so, billboards, posters, magazines, newspaper there is a different audience. If they are aiming the poster at the younger audience then they might put violence, guns and things on it. These are codes and convections which would attract the younger audience. For broadcast they might show short clips from the film which attracts the older age, as they are the ones watching T V the most. They might even show the trailer of the film. E-Media every aged people are on the social networking site, they might have an own page for Ill Manors which the audience could like. They might have any review about the film.  They might have their own blogs for the older audience, this is so that they could read about the film and they could find out more. They have their own website which the target audience is everyone. The internet allows the audience to write up their views about the film; it allows them to get involved with the film. This makes them out in some interest to the film.

I don’t think that the audience would be involved in promoting the film because everyone would have their own view. This means that the audience might not get involved that much in promoting the film. There might be some people who would promote it, but as I said everyone would have different views. For example If I write a review about the film and I’m saying that the film is good, then someone else writes a review and says that the film is not good the audience would believe none of us.

Audience theories
I think that the social class is people like middle class and the demographics  is like A/B/C2/E I think the is because the younger audience would be the students which would be class E1 because there still students.  and then the older aged people would be C2/B/A they are high class people been to university and know are working and getting a good pay. It could also be people who read the guardian newspaper, they are known as high class as well. The film appeals more to men rather than women because it contains a huge amount of swearing violence, and sexual scenes which attract men more than women. The film would appeal more to Black and White people rather than Asians or any other race.
